4 You shall not make yourself any graven image [to worship it] or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5 You shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me,
6 But showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Exodus 20:4-6 AMPC

do not bow down to graven images
In the Old Testament, in the Law of God it states that we shouldn't make any graven images and bow down to worship them. In many pagan religions or beliefs they create for themselves gods out of stone or various metals and they worship them. The Lord is clear in John 4 that we are to worship God in Spirit and in Truth.
24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality). John 4:24 AMPC
There are some churches out there and denominations who have statues of Jesus and Mary. They teach people to bow down to them and pay homage. We must understand that this is against a command of God. God is not in a statue and He is not in an image. We must worship Him in spirit and in truth as He has commanded.
Some people take this Scripture out of context and say that we shouldn't make any images that are in the Heavens or beneath at all. Some people condemn movies about Jesus or Christian cartoons. No one should be bowing down and worshipping those images in television. The context of the command is to not make graven images and bow down and worship them.
